Children

La Amistad Behavioral Health Services’ Children’s Program, for children ages five to 12, focuses on unconditional positive regard for the child in an environment that teaches structure, limits and good behavior. This co-ed program integrates school and therapy to treat youth mental health issues. The residential treatment program for childrenĀ is designed to help develop positive relationships with the child by using the positive peer influence of small groups and rewarding positive behaviors. Through the use of a “token economy” system, the child receives immediate positive feedback for acceptable behaviors.

The Children’s Program is offered as a residential or partial hospitalization (day treatment) program. This program serves individuals with serious behavioral, emotional, family, school and social problems. Typical problems treated include:

  • Bipolar disorder
  • Dual diagnosis (substance abuse)
  • Behavioral disorders
  • Sexual/physical abuse
  • Trauma
  • Depression
  • Schizophrenia
  • Personality disorders
  • Anxiety
  • School issues
  • ADHD

Strong family involvement is recommended, encouraged through family therapy, frequent visits and telephone calls. Conference calls with the facility staff, child and family enhance work with geographically distant families. In addition, there is a monthly Family Day that includes parent education groups, multi-family discussions, nursing education, therapeutic recreational activities and school principal conferences.
