When the stress and anxiety from a traumatic event are chronic and cause significant life disruption, the sufferer may be diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Trauma symptoms are typically experienced in three different ways:
La Amistad has been the provider of choice for Evidenced Based Treatment of PTSD and anxiety in adolescents for many years. We offer a warm and friendly residential and PHP levels of care in which our clients can feel comfortable and safe. We combine traditional cognitive behavioral treatment methods with the latest trauma therapy techniques. La Amistad trauma specializations include (but are not limited to) elements of EMDR, DBT, Prolonged Exposure Therapy and Sand-Tray Therapy.
In exposure therapy clients are equipped to experience imaginal anxiety-arousing situations in order to decrease excessive fear and anxiety in their everyday lives. Through a series of approximately 10 guided sessions, clients begin to address the trauma from the outside in, starting with how their everyday lives are being impacted by the event (feelings, behaviors). Eventually, confidence is established and more and more significant needs are addressed with the ultimate goal of decreasing the impact of the fear and anxiety surrounding the traumatic experiences. At La Amistad we have multiple highly trained therapists in Prolonged Exposure Therapy who incorporate the technique into other traditional treatment methods.
Sand-Tray therapy allows a person to construct his or her own imaginal world using miniatures and colored sand.
The scene created acts as a reflection of the person’s life and allows for a method of resolving conflicts and gaining insight when more traditional/direct methods are not effective.
We have found that achieving awareness and insight within a therapeutic living environment allows our clients to feel safe verbalizing their experiences associated with the trauma. Learning to accept emotional support from others in the recovery community can lead to significant breakthroughs and provide a strong foundation for long-term recovery.
